Global Overview: ENSO-neutral conditions are present, with a high chance of La Niña developing during August-October. Heavy rainfall in parts of West Africa, Yemen, Central America, and Northern South America (NSA) will likely persist.
Africa Weather Hazards
Continuous heavy rainfall is causing ongoing flooding in West A Dryness has reduced in East Africa’s western region due to aboveaverage rainfall.
Inundation has increased in the Sudd wetlands of South Sudan.
Flooding occurs in the Blue Nile catchment area along the border between Sudan and Ethiopia. Heavy rainfall has caused three landslides in the Goza Zone (South Ethiopia Region, southwestern Ethiopia).
Flooding occurs in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan area in South Africa. Heavy rainfall and strong winds have also affected the Cape Town city area. Less intense widespread flooding has occurred in Angola.
Since April, eastern Liberia, southwestern Cote d’Ivoire, eastern Nigeria, and western Cameroon have been experiencing abnormal dryness due to below-average rainfall. Large deficits over the last two months have led to drought conditions in eastern Nigeria and western Cameroon.
Flooding occurs in Montserrado (Monrovia and adjacent communities), Bong, and Grand Cape Mount Counties of Liberia, Maradi in Niger, southeast Chad, and the Niger and Abuja States in Nigeria. Flooding is expected in southern Guinea due to recent and forecasted heavy rainfall.
Portions of Congo-Kinshasa, South Sudan, and Uganda face abnormal dryness. The dryness has increased over the past two months, leading to a drought in northern Uganda.
Hot conditions will continue in Western Sahara, Mauritania, Mali, Algeria, and Morocco.
