After the huge earthquake of 7.1 M at a depth of 10 km occurred in southern Xizang prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region, south-western China on 7 January at 01.05 UTC, the number of casualties has increased. The epicentre was located approximately in Dingri County, 157 km south-western of Xigazê city.
Media reports, as of 8 January, 126 fatalities, 188 injured people, 407 rescued people, 30,000 evacuated people, and a total of more than 46,500 affected people across 27 villages throughout the affected area. In addition media also reports over 3,600 damaged and destroyed houses.
National authorities have deployed so far a total of 14,668 emergency response personnel for search and rescue operations.
The Chinese Red Cross Society has launched an emergency reaction to provide 8,900 relief materials, including cotton tents, quilts, insulated jackets, and folding beds, to the earthquake-affected areas and is coordinating with private sectors and foundations to provide relief items and support the emergency response teams.
